Herbert beschreibt die MAR wie folgt:

Medical Assistance Radio (MAR)

an abbreviated summary by Herbert Scheider, DF9KN, Netcontrol of MAR

Basically ist is an organisation for medical help in case of emergency, based on amateur radio.
Founded by Dr. med. Wilfried Ruppert, DJ5RT. In 1982, during one of his radio-expeditions into Africa he found out, that there were many deficiencies in medical care, specially in some underdeveloped parts of the continent.
Inspired by the work of Doctor Service in Nairobi together with the Flying Doctors, he decided to do something in the same way for Germany.

The MAR then became a member of DARC (German Amateur Radio Society) under the Callsign DL0MAR.

The members consists of medical Doctors, members of missionary societies, members of govermental agencies, Germans in foreign countries, socieally engaged radio-amateurs. Also participating are members of GTZ (Society for technical co-operation) Callsign: DF0GTZ.

Every morning throughout the whole year, we meet during summer at 06:45 UTC. resp. one hour later in winter. The frequencies are 14.332 MHz resp. 21.332 MHZ. The meeting lasts approximately about 1/2 hour daily.

We were involved in numerous activities in the past. That can hardly be described in details.

Let me give some examples: In the uphaeval in Romania for example we managed to direct about 3.000 tons of medicine and food from all over Europe to the point where it were needed mostly.
We brought children who's ilness could not be treated in their home country to medical spacialist into Germany. We helped to get people who were threatened during civil war out of the country.
Sailing crews on the way to America have been given medical advice many times. Once we saved a life, when we delivered a metal plate needed in brain operation. Very often we cared for medicine not available at the place where they were needed. We airmailed to places like Karaganda, Bamako, or Eastern countries sometimes hundreds of kilos medicine. In cases where there were no other possibilities of communication, we arranged for example to transfer the message of the sudden dead of a family member.
Lately a complete medical lab could be shipped into Odessa (Russia).
No big surprise that five of our most active members have won the "Golden Antenna" during the last ten years.(That is an international honourable award, given once a year world-wide to radio amateur for outstanding performance in social engagement.
The list could be continued for much more what belongs to our daily work.

The money needed for all those activities comes out of our own pocket. From time to time somebody makes a donation which of course is utilised for the above mentioned work.

If there is anybody who ist interested in our activities and is willing to participate, we would highliy appreciate.

I hope that this can give you a general impression of MAR.

73, Herbert (Netcontrol of MAR)
