2010 - March, Visiting DF0MTL

Since we both, DL7AFB and DL7AKL, are active at nice and warm weather only, the March-Contest is a good time for making a visit to some other contesters in the neighbourhood. This year we visited the club station DF0MTL operating from the "Deditzer Hoehe", in JO61JF. Stefan, DL9GRE, gave a warm welcome and introduced us to the crew. (left) Anchor: 4mm high strengths HPPE rope (Liros Regatta-2000) tied securely to anchor. (middle) New 15-meter / 50-foot tower with 4 stacked 9 element F9FT Tonna Yagis came to first operation. The three upper sections are made out of 35mm DURAL® like alloy pipe. The lower section is realised by plug-able 40mm, 45mm and 50mm AlMgSi1 alloy pipes, respectively. (right)  CQ-Contest: DL7AFB at his station, which was built up in a tiny trailer. This shelter protected from heavy weather this weekend. The station set up: Elecraft K2, homebrew high dynamic range transverter (built by DL7AKL), HA1YA high power amplifier ME-750VB incorporating a GU-74 tube and Amilo PC. Watch Video on YouTube.

Unfortunately the aluminium pipe did not withstand the tremendous mechanical stress during erection and broke - see detailed report below. So we had to improvise a smaller set-up out of the remaining pieces.  (right)  Thunderhead on the horizon, a herald of a upcoming thunderstorm that brought heavy rain and lightning during the night.

Experience made with TECADI Mast Systems

Disaster during first erection: for correct adjustment of all guy ropes the first trial was carried out carefully without any load. Step by step three, six, nine and at last twelve 1.2-m segments were stacked giving a total height of 14.4-m. As recommended, each third segment got a guy. At 3.6m, 7.2m, 10.8m, 14.4m, respectively, the mast was tied with 4mm high strengths Dyneema® rope. A  4.8m gin-pole made out of four TECADI segments and a pulley was used for lifting the mast. After reaching an elevation of about 60° at full length the mast suddenly collapsed. Pictures showing the material damage. Luckily no one got injured.
